William is the CEO and Representative Director of Japan Leadership Advisory LLC and a Partner at Leverage LLP, which is a Tokyo-based Executive Search Firm. Cited in the Wall Street Journal and having been interviewed on CNBC, William is a recognized executive search consultant.

Background:

William was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in northwest Indiana. He attended Indiana University in Bloomington and received a dual BA in Political Science/ Philosophy (Interdepartmental) and German. William also studied at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau and lived in Germany for a combined total of 2 years. William started his career in Private Banking at an Indiana State Bank which was later acquired by Old National Bank. William then worked for a joint venture owned by Microsoft and the Tribune Company called Careerbuilder.com in Chicago, Illinois. During that period, he was responsible for marketing multimedia recruitment solutions to international joint ventures, start-up operations and technology-based partnerships. In 2004, he moved to Japan and has lived there for 17 years working in the executive search industry. He is fluent in English and German and has a conversational level of Japanese.

Senior Managing PartnerYukio "Peter" Shumi

Peter is a Senior Partner at JLA and the Managing Partner of JLA’s Japanese Affiliate Partner firm, Leverage LLP. He was previoulsy a Partner & Vice President at Ray & Berndtson, a globally recognized retained search firm founded in 1965. As a C-level executive having worked in all facets of management, Peter brings a wealth of experience to the firm and to our clients. He has over 20 years of executive search experience, placing executives into various roles in a wide variety of industries.

He started his career in the U.S. and Canada with Procter & Gamble and later transferred to the Japan office. Later in his career he served as Representative Director and Board Member to Rockwell International, was CFO at Blockbuster Entertainment Japan, Director of the Board and in charge of Financial Control and General Administration at Ingersoll-Rand Japan, Japan and Asia Managing Director at Thomas & Betts Corporation, several Senior Level Positions at Sumida Corporation, and was the Vice President of Finance and Administration for the Asia Region at Celerity, Inc.

He holds a BA in Economics from Aoyama Gakuin University and an MBA from Texas Tech University. Having worked for mainly U.S. and Japanese multinational companies, Peter is fully bicultural and bilingual.

He is also very active in online social networks and blogging. He had at one point, some of the largest number of connections and followers on Facebook in Japan. He cultivates discussions around popular business topics and has been a leading contributor to the discussion around Japanese Globalization and the future of Japanese business.

Kaz is a Senior Partner at JLA and Leverage LLP, our Japanese Affiliate Partner Firm. He has over 7 years experience in executive search after gaining 25 years of international business experience.

He started his career at Obayashi Corporation, one of the top 20 contractors in the world and one of the top 5 Japanese construction companies, working in various roles in Tokyo, Shanghai, Washington D.C. and New York City. He then worked in Financial Controller and CFO roles at Air Products, Corning, and Coherent.

He has a BA in Economics from Keio University and an MBA from George Washington University. Having worked at U.S. and Japanese multinational companies, Kaz is bilingual and bicultural.

He is an active member of the Nada High School, Keio University and George Washington University Alumni Associations. He also works part-time as a male model and has done photoshoots for famous Japanese companies, brands, and marketing companies. Leading an active lifestyle, Kaz is a power lifter and in 2020, he won the Japan Classic Masters Powerlifters Tournament in Tokyo. He is deeply connected in the Japanese business community and can offer our clients a unique perspective on building successful international teams.
